A few weeks ago, I got the idea into my head that I should try art journaling. I vowed to art journal every day in February. Just 15 minutes every day. Now this might not seem like such a big thing, but it’s a new venture for me, and a little bit scary at that because I like things to be just-so. And art journaling is not. It’s messy, and free form and to be honest, a little bit out of my comfort zone. But this year I’m trying new things, especially things that scare me, so Art Journaling in February it is!
I’ve been gathering supplies – a book, gesso, paint, spray ink. Even bought myself some oil pastels at Staples (as suggested by the wonderfully talented art journaler, Dina Wakely). I’ve collected links of techniques from around the web to help me out and pinned them to my art journaling board on Pinterest.
I suspect that I’ll be getting a lot of ideas/inspiration/direction from the fabulous and funny Julie Fei-Fan Balzer who has a whole section of her website dedicated to art journaling every day:
And so the adventure begins. I’m blocking off my 15+ minutes to art journal today. Join me! Please leave me a comment if you find art journaling links that you’d like to share!
I KNOW I don’t even need to put the link on here, but the ever-inspiting Ali Edwards has some fantastic art journaling under her belt. Here’s one of her blog posts about a collage-painting sort of thing she did that looked like a horizon expansion feed-the-inner-artist deal: http://aliedwards.com/2011/02/from-time-to-time.html She has TONS of goodness.
Thanks Natalie – I’m going to check that out right now!
Looking forward to seeing how it goes – and hope you have lots of fun … I love the work of Rosie, over at http://atcexchange.blogspot.com/2012/02/blue-mood.html.
Thanks for sharing Alexa – I will check that out!
I just posted about my art journaling! I’ve been doing it digitally with a group at scrapbookgraphics.com – Art Journal Caravan. I really love it!
Beautiful work Patrice!
I too am getting more and more intrigued by art journaling – check out Karen Grunberg’s website (I think it’s Karenika.com ) to check out her stuff – they have been super inspiring for me. Thanks for the recommendation for oil pastels – I looked at some at my local store and was just overwhelmed by the options – I just picked up Claudine Hellmuth’s acrylics last week (I got 1 of the small sampler packs) but have yet to bust them out. Happy art journaling!
Thanks Kim! I love Karen’s work – she is so a constant source of wonder and inspiration for me! Glad I could help — I’m still trying to figure out the best way to use the pastels, it’s a work in process 🙂
